At some point in your life it’s a fair assumption that you’ll experience back pain. Women and men are equally affected by back pain, which can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp sensation that leaves a person incapacitated. Pain can begin abruptly as result of an accident or it can develop over time due to age related changes in the spine. The tide is turning in the medical community when it comes to treating pain. They are no longer telling patients to crawl into bed or limit movement. In the past, doctors would prescribe pain meds and send you on your way. They are now discouraging pain medication because they simply are not the answer. Taking pain medication for chronic pain over time will cause the pain to increase. They now are saying, “Take Pilates two days a week and call me in a month”. People need to know the best medicine is to keep moving. Daily movement increases your body’s natural fluids that lubricate your joints. Motion is lotion! Movement is the best and safest treatment for your body.
What makes Pilates so effective is that it addresses the underlying structural imbalances in the body that lead to back pain. Issues like lack of core support, pelvic instability, muscular imbalances, poor posture, and lack of body awareness all affect back health. When people get into doing Pilates on a regular basis, it helps them prevent back pain but also helps treat back pain. Doctors find once patients strengthen their spine through Pilates, other ailments go away. Doctors report patients who have done hundreds of different types of therapies, done injections, tried a lot of different approaches. Then they go through Pilates, and they notice a big difference. The important principles of Pilates are consistent with an exercise program that promotes back health. In particular, learning awareness of neutral alignment of the spine and strengthening the deep postural muscles that support this alignment are important skills for the back pain patient.
