Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Pilates is a system of toning that incorporates some cardio (cardiovascular) exercise, and should be compared to strength training. It will raise your heartbeat, warm you up, and show you muscles you didn’t know you had.
Pilates will change the shape of your body. It is not uncommon for clients to drop a dress size, even if their weight is the same on a scale. If you want to lose pounds, you must also address your diet. We highly recommend seeing a nutritionist who can help you pinpoint where you are hiding the extra calories in your diet in addition to your Pilates training.
Who was Joseph Pilates?
Joseph H. Pilates, the founder of the Pilates exercise method, was born in Germany. As a child he was frail, living with asthma in addition to other childhood conditions. To build his body and grow stronger, he took up several different sports, eventually becoming an accomplished athlete. As a nurse in Great Britain during World War I, he designed exercise methods and equipment for immobilized patients and soldiers.
How can beginners get the most benefit from Pilates?
Be consistent, especially in the beginning. Don’t just try it once. Give it a few shots, and do it in succession. Make it your reward, your break from a hectic day. Also, listen to your body and really concentrate — it makes for a better workout.
Someone once told me that you need to “arrive” for Pilates, meaning you have to be there mentally as well as physically. To get the most out of Pilates, you have to be very present. Your body and mind will thank you.
When will I see results?
You will feel the results before you see them. How long it takes to see the results depends on your physical fitness before Pilates, the amount of time you devote per week, and whether you use private or group Pilates sessions. Other factors include whether or not you have injuries, and if you participate in any other physical activity outside of your Pilates session. If you’re taking private Pilates sessions 2 to 3 times per week, you will see results within the first 2 to 3 weeks, and feel the difference within the first 3 sessions.
How long are private Pilates sessions and group Reformer/Tower classes?
50 minutes total. 45 Minutes of exercise and 5 minutes of stretching.
